How Internet Speed Tests Work and Why Results Vary

An internet speed test measures the performance of your connection by transferring test data between your device and a remote server. The tool records how much data is transferred over a specific period and calculates three core metrics: download speed (data flowing from the internet to your device), upload speed (data flowing from your device to the internet), and ping latency (the time it takes for a single data packet to make a round trip to the server). Several factors influence your speed test results. Ping measures the round-trip time for a small data packet to travel from your device to a server and back, in milliseconds (ms). Lower ping is better. Under 20 ms is excellent, 20–60 ms is good, 60–100 ms is acceptable, and over 100 ms may cause noticeable lag in gaming and video calls.
Jitter measures the variation in ping over time. A consistent ping of 40 ms is better than a ping that varies between 10 ms and 90 ms. High jitter causes choppy audio and video in calls. Under 10 ms jitter is ideal for real-time applications.
Speed test results are affected by Wi-Fi signal strength, router quality, network congestion, VPN usage, the number of connected devices, and the distance to the test server. For the most accurate result, connect via Ethernet cable and close other applications before testing.
